How much were you drinking and what problems was it causing?
I was drinking every single evening – at least one bottle a night, sometimes two. It was causing me to have blackouts – conversations where I didn’t remember with my son and waking up several times in the middle of the night, then in the morning feeling groggy, cloudy headed, full of regret and not feeling good about myself – in fact, hating myself for drinking the night before.
What was the key reason you wanted to change- what motivated you?
I knew I just couldn’t go on. I was a bad example to my son; I hated feeling so bad all the time – not just physically, but mentally. I also didn’t think highly of myself.
How did you discover me?
There was an ad on Facebook – I guess because I was looking for ways to cut down on alcohol and Just the Tonic popped up. I joined the Facebook group, saw there were other women like myself who were struggling to control their alcohol and were actually succeeding and changing their life, so that intrigued me.
Were you sceptical this method would work?
Well I could see that other women’s lives were changing. I was a bit sceptical, but the programme looked solid and actually could be achievable. I had to try something, and reading the testimonials really helped as I could see others that were in the same position I had been in.
Did you try before to cut down or have a break from alcohol?
I tried, but failed. Alcohol is so powerful, isn’t it? It kept hooking me in to drink. I justified drinking over and over.
What amazing results did you get? – has it allowed you to enjoy being a mum more? What about the impact on your career?
I feel GREAT!!! I wake up in the morning not only feeling good after having slept sounder, but I wake up with no “inner conflict” going on in my head. I have a closer connection with my teenage son and my work is so much better as I am no longer hung over in the mornings. My tolerance is better, I can think clearer, remember better and work with my team so much better – and actually enjoy it!
Did you enjoy the group structure?
Absolutely! The group was indispensable – so nice to be able to not only received unconditional support, but to also give support to others in my position. We were all going through the same thing – at different stages, and that is what was so beneficial and wonderful.
What would you say to someone thinking of signing up to work with me?
It is the BEST investment you can give yourself. I can smile at myself in the mirror – I was never able to do that before! I have discovered a brand new me and I honestly did not know I was capable of feeling this content, at peace with myself and can finally say I love myself. If alcohol has taken control over your life and you think about when you will have your next drink and/or constantly desire a drink, then this is definitely a move you will not regret.
There is so much more to living life – and the quality of life is so much richer! I wish I had known about Just the Tonic years ago!
Sandra is so supportive – she can see your situation so objectively and when you work through a difficult situation, you will come out the other side with a feeling of accomplishment – knowing there is a solution to your problem.
What are you most excited about now that you are alcohol free?
I have a whole future ahead of me – this is the beginning of the rest of my life and there is so much more I want to accomplish! Now that I am not limited by the closed off life I had with alcohol, I can see so much clearly. I enjoy going to parties/events sober – I‘m the one having the best time! – I feel sorry for those who are drinking as they won’t be able to enjoy all the details the next morning!
I am making plans for my future, where I can see so much clearer and everything looks more achievable and brighter.
