Can You Tell Us a Bit About How Much You Were Drinking, What Sort of Issues It Was Causing You, and Why You Wanted to Make a Change?
I think it’s one of those things that had probably been on my mind for a number of years. I work in an industry where I’m away a lot with work, so there’s always been a kind of “work hard, play hard” culture — corporate expenses, socialising, and the ever-present encouragement to drink.
With all the travel, late nights, and hotel stays, there was always opportunity — and pressure — to drink.
Over time, I came to realise that the way I was feeling was, in many ways, my own doing. Not because of occasional excess, but because of consistency. I’d suddenly notice it had been two weeks since I’d gone a day without drinking.
As work stress and life pressures grew, I started drinking earlier in the day, convincing myself I was still in control. But gradually, I realised the opposite was true — alcohol was controlling me. It was so normalised that it felt invisible, yet it was clearly affecting my mental health.
How Much of It Was About Making the Most of Your Potential Versus Being Worried Your Performance Was Affected?
It was more about making the most of my potential — about being present enough to experience life fully. I felt like I could do more, both personally and professionally.
In a busy corporate career, finding work-life balance is already a challenge. But when both the work and life parts are dominated by drinking, you’re not really achieving balance at all. You’re just running on empty.
After a busy week, I realised I wasn’t truly recharging — I was numbing.
How Did You Find the Early Weeks of the Program?
I was nervous at first. The early modules helped me really understand how alcohol affects the brain, and the WhatsApp group became a key support system.
Initially, it felt awkward to share with strangers, but over time, we built real connections. Even though you never meet in person, the video calls and group messages create important touch points that help you feel understood and supported.

How Did It Feel When We Spoke About Taking a Break From Alcohol in the Final Months?
At first, the idea sounded daunting. But when the time came, I was actually excited — so much so that I started early!
By the end of that month, I’d gone nearly six weeks alcohol-free. What I took out of my life — alcohol — was replaced by so much more: more time with family, more clarity, and a greater sense of gratitude.
I could finally give back to the people who’d supported me, instead of being the one who needed driving home.
What Was It Like to Not Drink at Work Events or Family Trips?
At work events, I realised nobody really cared whether I was drinking or not. My ability to socialise, connect, and share stories had nothing to do with alcohol — it came from me.
On family trips, I was calmer, more present, and more patient. My daughter even told me I was funnier and more attentive, which meant everything to me.

How Has Your Confidence and Mindset Changed?
My confidence has improved massively. People at work noticed a shift — in my energy, clarity, and attitude.
The program gave me the space for self-reflection. It highlighted patterns I hadn’t recognised before and helped me understand the emotional triggers behind my drinking.

What’s Your Relationship With Alcohol Like Now?
I’ve had drinks since finishing the program, but in a controlled way. I’m drinking far less, sleeping better, and feeling healthier overall.
I don’t feel like I’ll slip back into old habits — but I also know that staying mindful is key. Awareness, not willpower, is what keeps me in control.
What Advice Would You Give Someone Considering the Program?
Acknowledge that there’s an issue and commit to the process. It might feel awkward at times, but it’s worth it.
When you reach the other side, you’ll see that it’s not just about drinking less — it’s about transforming your mindset, regaining balance, and living a fuller life.
