How to stay motivated when you really want to drink

Motivation is all about having the “oomph” to do things you need to do when you want to. Staying motivated is hard to come by sometimes, especially when you feel horrible inside and everyone else around you seems to be enjoying their drinks. If you keep asking yourself, what can I do? Is stopping drinking a good idea? Where do I find the motivation? Well, today, we would like to share with you a few possible ways how to stay motivated when you really want a drink.

1) Find a goal

One of the ways to stay motivated when you want a drink is to set a goal for yourself. The goal should be something you want to do that will get you out of bed every morning and help you focus on what you want to achieve. It doesn’t matter if it’s a short-term goal or a long-term goal as long as it’s helping you push forward. If you are not enthusiastic about the goal you are trying to achieve, you might find it challenging to stay motivated, especially when the goal is a long term one.

2) Embrace positivity

Stop telling yourself, “I can’t do this” or “I can’t do that”, or coming up with excuses every time. The negativity wastes your time and energy and drains your willpower.

Obstacles are part of our lives. Everybody goes through a rough patch, but the journey to staying motivated will be determined by how you will move past these obstacles in a positive way. There is always a way through an obstacle, whether you climb over it, under it, or through it; you just have to be optimistic about it.

3) Find things that can lift your mood

Do things that lift your mood, like going for a walk, talking to a friend or family member, or taking a shower. Finding these things that lift your mood can help uplift your mental state.

You can take up walking as a habitual thing, especially in the morning, which can help you set up for the day and establish the day’s baseline. Having a partner that listens to you or a supportive family around you can also help you stay motivated and help you mend broken bonds. And lastly, do not underestimate something as simple as taking a shower, because that can be an easy and quick way to change your mood.

4) Reflect on why you stopped drinking

Another thing you need to do is to reflect on what was going on before you stopped drinking and why you decided to quit drinking in the first place. Look at where you were when you were drinking and what you were thinking. What consequences did you encounter with your drinking? What was happening in your life that led you to this stage?

Then, step by step, flash-forward into your life and try to imagine what things will be like in two or five years. Think of what you can change in your life now that you’re not drinking. It’s a great exercise to stay motivated and give you some self-assurance that you are on the right path.

5) Focus on the benefits

Focus on the advantages of not drinking instead of the disadvantages. Think of yourself as a salesperson. A salesperson will always sell you on the benefit of a product and not on its drawbacks, so you have to really sell hard on what you want in your life and what you need to achieve.

The bottom line

Stopping drinking is not an easy task, and it can take time, so don’t be too hard on yourself when it doesn’t stick at first. However, if you apply any of these solutions, regardless if you are trying to stop drinking, start a business or get an education, they can positively shape your life.
